Values and Policies
In 1996, a consultation took place regarding the future direction of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. One of the results was a special Task Group set up to reflect on what it means for Baptists to be Christ-centred. The resulting document, Five Core Values for a Gospel People, identified key values that should guide our living:-
A Prophetic Community
Following Jesus in confronting evil, injustice and hypocrisy. Challenging
worldly concepts of power, wealth, status and security (Mic 6:10; Amos 5:23-24;
Acts 11:27-30; James 5:1-6).
An Inclusive
Community
Following Jesus in transcending barriers of gender, language, race, class, age
and culture. Identifying with those who are rejected, deprived and powerless
(Acts 10:34-35, 13:1; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; Gal. 3:26-29; Jam. 2:1-13, Rev. 7:9).
A Sacrificial
Community
Following Jesus in accepting vulnerability and the
necessity of sacrifice. Seeking to reflect the generous, life-giving nature of
God (Luke 9:57-62; 14:25-35; Acts 4:32-37, 2 Tim 3:10-12).
A Missionary
Community
Following Jesus in demonstrating in word and action God's forgiving and healing
love. Calling & enabling people to experience the love of God for
themselves (Mt. 28:19-20; Mk. 16:15-18; Luke: 24:45-49; Acts 1:8; 2 Tim 4:5).
A Worshipping
Community
Following Jesus in engaging in worship and prayer which inspire and undergird
all we are and do. Exploring and expressing what it means to live together as
the people of God, obeying his Word and following Christ in the whole of daily
life (Acts 2: 42-47; 4:23-31; 1 Cor. 14:26).
